“Today is a sacred day for us, because in it we celebrate the martyrdom of the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul ...
In reality, the two were as one; although they were martyred on different days, they gave the same testimony ”, explained Bishop Santo Agostinho (354-430) in his sermons on the solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, celebrated on June 29, but which is transferred to Sunday next in Brazil and other countries ..
This celebration recalls that Saint Peter was elected by Christ: “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church”. Humbly, he accepted the mission of being “the rock” of the Church.
The Pope, for his part, as Successor of Peter and Vicar of Christ, is the perpetual and visible principle and foundation of unity, both for the bishops and the multitude of the faithful. He is Pastor of the whole Church and has full, supreme and universal power. For this reason, the day of the Supreme Pontiff is also celebrated on this date.
In the same way, Saint Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, is commemorated, who before his conversion was a persecutor of Christians and became, with his life, an ardent evangelizer for all Catholics, without reservations in announcing the Gospel.
As Pope Benedict XVI recalled in 2012, “the Christian tradition has considered Saint Peter and Saint Paul inseparable: in fact, together, they represent the whole Gospel of Christ”.
“Although they are humanly quite different and despite the conflicts that were not lacking in their mutual relationship, they realized a new and authentically evangelical way of being brothers, made possible precisely by the grace of the Gospel of Christ that worked in them. Only following Christ leads to a new fraternity ”, he said.
