On August 1, the Church celebrates the liturgical memory of Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Doctor of the Church for his writings on morals and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as Redemptorists.
This Italian saint, born in Naples, Italy, wrote “The Practice of Love for Jesus Christ”, “Preparation for Death”, “Glories of Mary”, with “Moral Theology” being the work that influenced the formation of the clergy by many years.
Santo Afonso preached with simplicity and taught his missionaries that “a sermon without logic is dispersed and lacks flavor. A pompous sermon does not reach the mass. For my part, I can tell you that I never preached a sermon that the simplest woman could not understand ”.
Among his well-known phrases is: "There are no weak people and strong people spiritually, but people who do not pray and people who know how to pray".
Benedict XVI explained to the faithful on a day like today, in 2012, that this saint “reminds us that a relationship with God is essential in our life. Without it, we lack the fundamental relationship ”. He also recalls that “God created us out of love, so that he could give his life to us in full”.
Santo Afonso founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, with which he aimed to evangelize in regions of abandoned population. His work reflected his way of living, marked by kindness, simplicity and charity.
The saint died at the age of 90, on the night of July 31 to August 1, 1787. He was canonized in 1839 and declared Doctor of the Church in 1871.
Santo Afonso, whose name means "ready for combat", is represented with the crucifix, the books, the rosary or the figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom he had a deep devotion.
His congregation of Redemptorists arrived in Brazil in 1894. Today, there are about 600 missionaries spread across 25 states and the Federal District. It develops a wide evangelizing work, being present in several missionary fronts, such as: formation houses, foreign missions, academic area, communications, itinerant missions, parishes and sanctuaries, among which, Nossa Senhora Aparecida, in Aparecida (SP) , and that of the Divine Eternal Father, in Trindade (GO).
